Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of these terms

By creating a Tynwald account, you agree to these Terms of Service and to the Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't create an account.

2. Who this is for

Tynwald is built for students, researchers, lecturers, law enforcement professionals, legal practitioners, military personnel, cybersecurity specialists, and community members engaged with criminology and criminal justice. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. Selecting a professional role (e.g. Law Enforcement, Legal Practitioner) is a self-declaration — Tynwald does not currently verify professional credentials.

3. Your account

• You're responsible for keeping your password secure and for all activity under your account.
• You agree to provide accurate information — your name and role are shown to other members alongside anything you post.
• You can update your name, role, and profile details at any time from your Profile page, and change your password from Settings.
• Forgot your password? You can reset it by email from the login page.
• Tell us right away if you believe your account has been compromised.

4. Acceptable use

Tynwald exists for serious discussion of criminology, criminal justice, cybercrime, victimology, and related fields — subject matter that is sensitive by nature. You agree not to:

• Harass, threaten, or target other members, on or off the platform.
• Post content that incites, glorifies, or provides instructions for violence or criminal acts.
• Impersonate another person or misrepresent your professional role.
• Use case studies, research uploads, or discussion threads to share information that would compromise an active investigation, identify a victim without consent, or violate a legal restriction (e.g. a sealed case or gag order).
• Upload content you don't have the rights to share.
• Use the platform to send unsolicited messages at scale, scrape data, or interfere with its normal operation.

We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms.

5. Community Safety Alerts

Community Safety Alerts are not an emergency service. They are member-submitted and not verified or monitored by Tynwald in real time. If you're reporting an active emergency, contact local police or emergency services directly — do not rely on this platform. Posting false or knowingly misleading safety alerts is a violation of these terms.

6. Your content

You own what you post — posts, comments, research uploads, case study discussions, and images. By posting it, you grant Tynwald a license to display, distribute, and store it as needed to operate the platform (for example, showing your post in other members' feeds). This license ends when you delete the content, except where it's already been shared with or by other members (e.g. a reply referencing your comment).

You're responsible for making sure you have the right to post whatever you upload, including images.

7. Messages between members

Direct messages are private between you and the recipient. Tynwald does not monitor message content, but reserves the right to investigate reported violations of these terms, including reviewing relevant messages where necessary.

8. Termination

You can stop using Tynwald at any time, and can delete your own account directly from Settings — this removes your posts, research items, and case studies, and is permanent. We may also suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, including the acceptable use rules above. Where possible, we'll explain why.

9. No warranty, limited liability

Tynwald is provided "as is." We don't guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. Content posted by members (including in the Case Study Library and Community Safety Alerts) reflects the views of the person who posted it, not Tynwald's.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Tynwald isn't liable for damages arising from your use of the platform, including reliance on member-submitted content.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the platform changes. We'll update the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes, notify members directly.
